Blood Products Laboratory
  Blood Products Laboratory
Also known as Blood Products Laboratory quarantine section. All unsreened blood products are stored here and quarantined until they are cleared. Quarantine fresh frozen plasma is boxed, weighed and stored until screening is performed and thus stored for factionation or for patient use. Quarantine platelets are also stored here and kept in the agitator until screening is performed. All data is inputted in computer database. In this Laboratory there are two -50 degrees celcius alcohol baths where all plasma are immediately frozen after preparation. This is the processing section. Initial unscreened blood products are received here where they are weighed and centrifuged in these cryofuges.
Blood Processing

There are devices to lift the raw initial product to facilitate the leuco filtering by natural gravity through specific filters. Presently we have 100% leuco depleted red cells.
This is where all quarantined products are stored. These dedicated freezers are continuously monitored and are charted for record purposes. Alarms are also present on each refrigerator.
When all screening & serological tests have been performed and passed, all fresh frozen plasma is stored in this cold room at -40 degrees celcius as non quarantine. Chart recorders and digital display gauges can easily be seen.
Boxed plasma is barcoded and labelled prior to being stored in the cold room.
The centrifuged blood units are carefully placed in fully automated separators, where products are automatically separated to their basic components. Fresh frozen plasma, Buffy coat and platelets.
Several blood products are separated in this laboratory.
