National Blood Transfusion Centre

Hello everyone

My name is Angelo Degiorgio, Manager at the National Blood Transfusion Services at the Donation Area. My responsibilities converge around the donors and everything that goes with them.

Blood donation and recruiting new blood donors is becoming more difficult for various reasons. One outstanding reason is the fact that employers are finding difficulties to release their employees from work to give blood. This is much understandable considering the situation of Malta in a very competitive environment. I am not blaming employers for the blood shortage but employers can really help, knowing that the Maltese employee is always ready to contribute an altruistic gesture of some kind towards society.

There are two ways how employers can help. Employers can encourage blood donation by organising groups of around twenty. According to the employer's exigencies, these groups can come to the Blood Bank with an appointment. We will make arrangements as regards to staff to minimise the amount of waiting time. One can come in the mornings or in the evenings, Mondays to Sundays including Public Holidays.

We also have the facility to come to the organisation's place with the Mobile Blood Donation Unit. Each organisation has a special day like foundation anniversaries. One might think of organising a Blood Drive on these special days. Small organisations might also group themselves and we are happy to come on your request.

We are also committed to give talks anywhere requested such as secondary and upper secondary schools, factories and places of work, hotels, voluntary and non-voluntary organisations, etc. Just contact us and we will discuss it.

I hope that with our combined efforts we succeed to maintain a safe supply of blood in reserve for anyone who might need it. I hope that employers, managers, school headmasters, etc, consider my suggestions. Best regards to all and thank you very much for your attention.

Angelo Degiorgio
