There were 2,801 first time blood donors last year, 145 less than the number of new donors the previous year which had been a record one.

National blood transfusion centre director Alex Aquilina told a news conference that 19,384 people called at the centre in 2009, against 20,310 in 2008.

There were 16,927 callers in 2007, 16.080 in 2006 and 15,656 in 2005.

The majority of donors – 9,432, were men, 5,188 were women.

Dr Aquilina said that the bank did not face any crisis in 2009 due to the consistent number of donors and to the attention given to avoid any blood being wasted.

He said that each bag of processed blood cost around 100 euros from the moment it was donated until it was passed on to a patient.

Health Minister Joe Cassar praised the centre's work and said that employees at the Blood Bank went beyond their call of duty.

This was built in a form of question and answer to guide and inform the public in general about the process of blood donation.

Although the Swine flu has not yet spread to an alarming state in our island, the National Blood Transfusion Service has issued some directives with which possible blood donors are being asked to comply in order to prevent any possible infections.

Before coming to any donation centre, donors are being asked to abide by the following;

  • Donors who have returned from abroad may not donate for a week after their arrival, if after one week they are free of symptoms than they may donate.
  • If a donor has had the infection, one has to leave 2 weeks after full recovery (certified by a doctor), from the infection before one can attend any blood centre to donate blood.
  • This also applies to family members who have had someone infected, (i.e.) not to donate before the above mentioned period.
  • Donors who might have any symptoms such as fever, joint pains, running nose etc. are to stay away from all donation centres.
  • All donors coming to any donation centre to donate blood please attend UNACCOMPANIED (i.e. without children and partners) as much as possible.
