Scientific Forum - "From Safe Food To Healthy Diets"

Brussels, November 20-21

Deadline for registration is 27 September 2007

EFSA is committed to excellence in science. Our remit covers some of the most cutting-edge topics that impact on the food we grow and eat. This two-day event gives EFSA the opportunity for a scientific debate and discussion with the scientific community, and other interested parties such as the media, consumers and industry on many of these issues which increasingly make headlines and have political, ethical and economic implications across Europe. Including presentations from some of Europe’s foremost experts in food and feed safety, the Forum will enable interaction between audiences and speakers.

Day 1 will focus on major challenges in food safety including risks from zoonoses and food-borne outbreaks, chemical risks, and a closer look at the link between diet, nutrition and health.

Day 2 offers a series of round table sessions on a range of diverse subjects developed to contextualize EFSA’s work within the daily cycle of farm to fork as well as looking at new and evolving issues in food safety. These include animal welfare and its impact on the food chain, legal and illegal colours in food and how consumer protection counts in pesticide risk analysis. A round table on risk communications will also look at food safety in the news, learning from the past and future challenges in reaching out in a meaningful way to all interested parties. EFSA concludes review of new scientific data on potential risks to human health from certain hormone residues in beef

EFSA was asked by the European Commission (EC) to assess any new scientific evidence that emerged since the last risk assessment in 2002 relating to the use of certain natural and synthetic growth promoting hormones (GPH) in cattle. EFSA’s Scientific Panel on Contaminants in the Food Chain (CONTAM) concluded that there are no grounds to call for revision of previous risk assessments.
