Rubella (German measles)

Rubella, also commonly known as German measles. It is caused by the rubella virus and is most serious in pregnant females as it can affect the unborn child.

Incubation period

12 - 23 days.

Signs and Symptoms

May have mild fever for 1 to 2 days.
Swollen, tender lymph nodes (usually in the back of the neck or behind the ears)
Pink or light red spots which appear 2 to 3 days later. It can itch and lasts up to 3 days. The rash begins on the face and spreads downward. As it spreads down the body, it usually clears on the face. This rash is often the first sign of illness that a parent notices.

Diagnosis

Clinical diagnosis and blood tests.

Treatment

There is no specific treatment for rubella.

Control and Prevention

Vaccination according to Child Immunisation Schedule.

Contact with pregnant women should be avoided.

Children and adults should be excluded at least 5 days from onset of rash.
