Rotavirus gastroenteritis

Rotavirus gastroenteritis is the most common cause of severe diarrhoea among children.

It is primarily is by faeco-oral transmission.

Reservoir

  • Human.

Incubation period

  • 1-3 days.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Sudden onset water diarrhoea, with or without vomiting.
  • Dehydration
  • Symptoms may last up to 6 days.

Diagnosis

Detection of virus in stools.

Treatment

Oral rehydration is generally enough but may need hospitalization for intravenous fluids and electrolytes.

Control and Prevention

  • Improved hygiene,
  • Education,
  • Clean water,
  • Breast feeding helps to provide passive immunity in the newborn (from maternal antibodies).
