Rotavirus gastroenteritis

Rotavirus gastroenteritis is the most common cause of severe diarrhoea among children.

It is primarily is by faeco-oral transmission.

Reservoir

Human.

Incubation period

1-3 days.

Signs and Symptoms

Sudden onset water diarrhoea, with or without vomiting.
Dehydration
Symptoms may last up to 6 days.

Diagnosis

Detection of virus in stools.

Treatment

Oral rehydration is generally enough but may need hospitalization for intravenous fluids and electrolytes.

Control and Prevention

Improved hygiene,
Education,
Clean water,
Breast feeding helps to provide passive immunity in the newborn (from maternal antibodies).
